For our fifth and final night we are headed to Jovellanos. Another 1.5 hour drive to another small town. The excitement still hasnt worn off. For us it is a repeat of the last 4 nights. For the great people in the church, this is our first and only night with them.
On this night over 50 kids showed up again. Wow. Only about 20-25 adults. So the church did their program and then it was our team with the kids. Right there in the sanctuary. After we finished Roger Dale gave his testimony and I wrapped up the evening with one last trick.
The neat thing about each night was that I had the chance to share some magic tricks with the pastors or lay leaders that work with the kids. This night was no different. Each night I left one or two tricks behind for the youth workers to use later.
After church we spent time with the pastor and his wife. Each night we were afforded the opportunity to talk with the pastor and learn what they are doing. For instance. In one church, the pastor has formed a satellite campus of the seminary to help teach new leaders for home churches and smaller country churches. He has set up a bible institute in his church that is educating over 30 men each month!
Each of the churches we visited are working toward this plan. Havana is such a distance that getting people there for seminary is very expensive. But..the local churches are forming these institutes and providing this education for free! Each church showed up the learning space, library, or the plans for classrooms and libraries.
God is moving in Cuba. I witnessed the work he is doing in little churches with weekly congregations of less than 100 people. These little churches are raising up leaders, spreading the word through home churches and caring for thier neighbors. A model that even the most progressive evangelical churches in America would like to emulate.
