Da Midwest Yankee is an environmental regulator for the Surface Water branch of a certain environmental agency.
I’m currently dealing with a mobile home park where they have two failed sewage disposal systems. This is probably some of the worst stuff I’ve ever seen. There are large areas of black sewage fungus and tubifex worms (these are cool to see because it looks like red waves in the wastewater…but it’s really these blood-red worms waving around trying to take in the oxygen in this low dissolved oxygen environment).

Anyway…after myself and the health department gave the owner multiple opportunities to improve the situation (which he diregarded), the health board met with him and shut most of the facility down. During the final meeting the owner was complaining about the cost of upgrading the system and “how can we move these poor people out of their homes?”….
But, what is the quality of life at this point? You have people that live in this mobile home park that are being exposed to human sewage on a daily basis (probably similar to how Cincinnati looked…..100 years ago!!!). When the county prosecutor orders the park closed, I can guarantee most of the residents will be up in arms. They, apparently, would rather live in this typhoid pool than move.
Our agency comes across looking like the jerk that just dropped the smelly gym shoe in the punch bowl…while this owner is Robin Hood, who thumbs his nose at authority to fight for the common man.
What I really want to tell everyone is that running a compliant sewage disposal system (when not on public sewers) for your mobile home park is the cost of doing business in this great country of ours. While government does a lot of bending in the areas of low income housing…public health can not be one of them. (I guess that’s why I’m not the public information specialist)
Sorry for the blast off…but this conservative environmentalist has had a long week.
