I am a runner

Posted on May 26, 2008

I finished the Lou Cox Memorial 5k. I was two minutes shy of having it renamed the Bryan Suddith Memorial 5k. I finished just short of death. Actually eBear paced me pretty well at an 11:30-12:00 minute mile pace. We finished a bit under 36 minutes I think. Neither of us placed in our division. Which was the 225# and above bracket.

Final results are still pending below and Bill Hibner has the photographic evidence that tells the tale.

Fixin’ to run

Posted on May 25, 2008

My dad’s family is from Alabama and they are always “fixin” to do something. Seemed appropriate on the eve that I become a runner. I showed Melissa a “rub mark” on my side from where I wore my iPod on my waist band last week. No more wearing things on my waist band. But rub marks are the sign of a runner.

Tomorrow Ebear is running with me along with two women who are runners and are married to co-workers. I have been assured by two folks that I will be paced correctly to run this thing at an 11:30 pace. Tonight in preparation I carbed up on some lo mein at the local Chinese buffet. Before you balk, remember I like my food and trying to maintain my waist line while running. Makes it more fun that way. Any skinny guy can run, but to be my size and complete a 5k is a real accomplishment. Besides the pasta I had some bananas too. I have a real fear of cramping up.

For the fun of it I thought I might detail the technicals of my running attire. I have seen some other running bloggers do this. So click below for the specs on my run. Read more

Victory..I think

Posted on May 24, 2008

Today was a good long run on a Saturday. I hit the road. Sidewalks and pavement. 1st mile was in 11:15, second mile was completed at 22:55 and I finished my run at 2.7 miles at 29:45. I picked up the pace quite a bit on the last leg. Running along a major road provided some encouragement and quickened the pace.

I now feel prepared for Monday’s 5k. Perhaps it will go a bit like Blankbaby’s first 5k last month.

Long Run days

Posted on May 23, 2008

Thursday was a good run. Two miles. 10:30 pace. Very happy with that. I finished strong..running at a sub 10:00 pace.

I have been haunted…not literally…but daunted..or vaunted by Saturday runs. The last couple of attempts have been horrific. So tomorrow…God willing and if the creek don’t rise (my dad always said that)…I will run on the road here in the neighborhood. My plan is 2.75 on the road. 32 minutes is the goal. We will see.

I will try to get an update on here tomorrow night.

Good news..Ebear..link at right..will be running with me on Monday. My pace will more of a quick walk for his 6′2″ frame. But he will be there with me. Thanks man.

Lou Who?

Posted on May 20, 2008

Saturday’s run was horrible. I won’t say more. I had my brother’s iPod shuffle and new running shorts and it was the first run after my 35th birthday and it sucked. I tried to lift weights instead but that didn’t work due to a bum thumb. A whole ‘nother story.

Monday was a great run. Until the end of the first mile. Then some guy unplugged my treadmill. This is after my new iPod shuffle didn’t work. Because I am an idiot. I shoulda used my brothers, but no I had to by my own and didn’t test it before packing in to the Y. So back to the run, in my new shorts again, and new shirt, Nike dry fit, sleeveless, I had to move to another treadmill and finish my second mile. This was a good run.

After the 1.5 mile mark, I increased my speed 1/10 mph for every 10th of a mile I did. This somehow ended my mile at a 6.2 pace. Two whole miles without walking. With a gimp thumb and no tunes.

Today, after seeing the doc about the thumb I hit the stationary bike for 30 minutes. Will run again tomorrow or Thursday. Looking for 2.25 miles or 2.5 miles.

Saturday I will run for as long as possible to ready myself for the Lou Cox 5k in Dayton. My first 5K! I am excited and my goal is not to be beaten by a 83 year old lady who is walking.  I am running in the Clydesdale B category, which is for me who weigh 225 and up. I plan to not be last in the category.
Details and possibly a pic to follow. For a real runner check out Ebear. His link is in the sidebar.
