Clarification

Posted on August 31, 2008

The wager was 10 miles non stop. I am getting ready for a 1/2 marathon which is 13.1 miles. My training schedule has me running 10 miles on October 11. That is my longest pre-race run. The 1/2 marathon and Melissa’s full Marathon is on October 19.

Tonight..I am running 7 miles. It is hot, high 80’s right now and I am starting in about 1/2 hour. Should take me 1:24 to complete. I hope to shave 4 minutes off this time. I have developed a callus (inside the left foot) and blisters on top of the callous and I fear that will slow me down a bit. I napped forever today in prep. Yesterday we canoed for the day and still feel that a bit.

Update later tonight…..did have a successful 6 mile run on Thursday night and a fast (for me anyways) 2 mile run on Friday night of this week.

Distance and overdue updates

Posted on August 28, 2008

As a refresher for the out of towners this running experiment came about after a bet. A friendly marital wager if you will. In the wake of comforter discomfort I blurted out something like “I would run 10 miles non stop for a that set of sheets and comforter from the Marriott”.

In a weakened state Melissa, my wife, agreed. She returned with “okay..run 10 miles non stop and we’ll buy the $400.00 bedding from the Marriott.
Seizing upon the opportunity I added, the bedding and a Jeep Wrangler.
She agreed. A week later I started running. October 10 is the day of my 10 mile run. I’ll let you know what happens. Since that time a 99 Mercedez Benz C230 has caught my eye, the jeep may be on hold. The running is not. Read more below the fold for an update of my progress.

Friday night lights

Posted on August 10, 2008

I decided to do my weekly long run on Friday night last week. Melissa is running longer and longer runs on Saturday’s and there isn’t enough time for us both to run. So I ran Friday night. Melissa dropped me off at Dorothy and Far Hills and said “find your way back home”. I remember the squealing tires and her laugh as she and the kids sped away.

I might have taken some artistic license with that last sentence. I did run home. 6 miles worth of it. Down Dorothy Lane. Down Ackerman. Up and down Lincoln Park. Back over Ackerman. Down Stroop to Dixie. Running at dusk is a whole ‘nother matter. Dangerous without sidewalks and streetlights. But I completed the run in about 72 minutes. My standard slow and steady pace of 5 MPH. This week is a repeat of last week. 2 miles on Tuesday, Five miles on Thursday and 6 miles on Saturday.

Five miles and easy runs

Posted on August 4, 2008

My training is moving along at a steady 5 miles per hour. This morning I was talking to another runner and I mentioned that Saturday I ran my three mile and two mile route combined. For a minute I had to stop and gather my thoughts. Who was this person who has their own three and two miles routes? Who is this guy that has a 4 mile route?
This guy!

So Saturday I ran my 3 miler and followed it with my two miler. I wish I had thought more about that.  My three mile route has a really moderate incline at the .75 to 1.2 mile area. My two mile route has a steeper, meaner, longer uphill climb at the .8 to 1.2 mile stretch. So after running 3 miles and running past my house with plenty of water, a shower and soft bed, I had 2 more miles to go, including the hill from hell at the conclusion of the 4th mile. Planning is everything. The fifth mile seemed like a walk in the park.

I did it. All jogging, running, no walking and did it in one hour and change. 22 seconds of change.

This morning I had a quick and easy two mile run. Would have been easier and quicker if it wasn’t for Batman and Politics. The Batman movie I saw last night didn’t end until 12:15 this morning and I had to run at 5:55 to have time to get ready for work and a campaign meeting at 7:00 a.m. The run was actually a bit fun and was able to chat with a couple of older guys who were out walking at 6:15 this morning.

Wednesday is a new five miler. I will be planning my route and will post the links to my routine two and three mile routes.
