.88 and blisters

September 29th, 2008 · 4 Comments

So. I haven’t posted in a while. Not witness relocation, just the perfect storm against blogging. In short, I started a new job this month, lost power for 6 days, bought new running shoes and took about a week off of running.

But..here is the update..I missed only one long run. It was supposed to be an 8 miler and I did a bit over three. I wasn’t feeling it.

Last night I put the new shoes back on, used some vaseline in the sensitive areas of my feet and set off for a 9 miler. 9.12 to be exact. My goal was 12 minute miles and I completed it with three new blisters, two of which were on top of two old ones. I also did the run at an 11:38 pace. Very happy with the result. Today I am going to see the running shoe expert at Endurance Sports in Sugarcreek Township. I am taking my new shoes and old shoes and some cash. I hopefully will come out with some idea of what is going on.

This weeks running schedule, 2, 7, 2 and 9 again.

Next week is 3,8,3 and 10.

The 10 will be Sunday the 12th. My long runs are on Sunday evenings. The 19th is the half marathon.

Burnt burgers, 7 miles and fantasy football

September 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment

What a busy weekend. 1o mile canoe trip with some buddies and their kids. Cookout at the lake afterwards on Saturday evening. Rest on Sunday, a 3 hour nap! 7 mile run on Sunday night and shaved 3 minutes and 40 seconds off my time. 7 mile run at an 11:25 pace.  My best time for that distance so far. My 5k time on that run was a bit under 34 minutes. Felt good after the run, but not good enough to run the 5k this morning.

I have both my drafts complete for the two fantasy football leagues. I am optimistic after each draft but only time will tell.
Enjoyed the Dragon’s game today as they closed their season and start the playoffs tomorrow. It was hot. Then back to the house for some burgers and dogs on the grill. A busy weekend for sure. New job starts on Wednesday, but have a short visit to the office tomorrow. More on that later.

Clarification

August 31st, 2008 · 2 Comments

The wager was 10 miles non stop. I am getting ready for a 1/2 marathon which is 13.1 miles. My training schedule has me running 10 miles on October 11. That is my longest pre-race run. The 1/2 marathon and Melissa’s full Marathon is on October 19.

Tonight..I am running 7 miles. It is hot, high 80’s right now and I am starting in about 1/2 hour. Should take me 1:24 to complete. I hope to shave 4 minutes off this time. I have developed a callus (inside the left foot) and blisters on top of the callous and I fear that will slow me down a bit. I napped forever today in prep. Yesterday we canoed for the day and still feel that a bit.

Update later tonight…..did have a successful 6 mile run on Thursday night and a fast (for me anyways) 2 mile run on Friday night of this week.

Distance and overdue updates

August 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments

As a refresher for the out of towners this running experiment came about after a bet. A friendly marital wager if you will. In the wake of comforter discomfort I blurted out something like “I would run 10 miles non stop for a that set of sheets and comforter from the Marriott”.

In a weakened state Melissa, my wife, agreed. She returned with “okay..run 10 miles non stop and we’ll buy the $400.00 bedding from the Marriott.
Seizing upon the opportunity I added, the bedding and a Jeep Wrangler.
She agreed. A week later I started running. October 10 is the day of my 10 mile run. I’ll let you know what happens. Since that time a 99 Mercedez Benz C230 has caught my eye, the jeep may be on hold. The running is not. Read more below the fold for an update of my progress.

Friday night lights

August 10th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I decided to do my weekly long run on Friday night last week. Melissa is running longer and longer runs on Saturday’s and there isn’t enough time for us both to run. So I ran Friday night. Melissa dropped me off at Dorothy and Far Hills and said “find your way back home”. I remember the squealing tires and her laugh as she and the kids sped away.

I might have taken some artistic license with that last sentence. I did run home. 6 miles worth of it. Down Dorothy Lane. Down Ackerman. Up and down Lincoln Park. Back over Ackerman. Down Stroop to Dixie. Running at dusk is a whole ‘nother matter. Dangerous without sidewalks and streetlights. But I completed the run in about 72 minutes. My standard slow and steady pace of 5 MPH. This week is a repeat of last week. 2 miles on Tuesday, Five miles on Thursday and 6 miles on Saturday.

Five miles and easy runs

August 4th, 2008 · 3 Comments

My training is moving along at a steady 5 miles per hour. This morning I was talking to another runner and I mentioned that Saturday I ran my three mile and two mile route combined. For a minute I had to stop and gather my thoughts. Who was this person who has their own three and two miles routes? Who is this guy that has a 4 mile route?
This guy!

So Saturday I ran my 3 miler and followed it with my two miler. I wish I had thought more about that.  My three mile route has a really moderate incline at the .75 to 1.2 mile area. My two mile route has a steeper, meaner, longer uphill climb at the .8 to 1.2 mile stretch. So after running 3 miles and running past my house with plenty of water, a shower and soft bed, I had 2 more miles to go, including the hill from hell at the conclusion of the 4th mile. Planning is everything. The fifth mile seemed like a walk in the park.

I did it. All jogging, running, no walking and did it in one hour and change. 22 seconds of change.

This morning I had a quick and easy two mile run. Would have been easier and quicker if it wasn’t for Batman and Politics. The Batman movie I saw last night didn’t end until 12:15 this morning and I had to run at 5:55 to have time to get ready for work and a campaign meeting at 7:00 a.m. The run was actually a bit fun and was able to chat with a couple of older guys who were out walking at 6:15 this morning.

Wednesday is a new five miler. I will be planning my route and will post the links to my routine two and three mile routes.

Five Miler

August 1st, 2008 · No Comments

Five Miles. That is exactly how long I commute everyday for work. 5 miles. That is 26, 400 feet. Or approximately 13,200 steps for a short guy like me. Tomorrow I plan to run jog 5 miles. I will be doing my regular 3 mile and 2 mile routes back to back to complete a 5 mile easy run to conclude my 4th week of training. I had a good 4 mile run yesterday and did it in a 12:07 pace. The goal is a sub 12 minute pace. Tomorrow my goal is of course one hour.

In preparation and in response to some physical issues I have purchases two new shirts. The first is an under armor “like” shirt. The second is a loose fitting wicking running shirt. Next I will upgrade my running shorts.
I wasnt in the mood to carb up with a bunch of noodles. So I had a carb heavy breakfast cereal with 1/2 cup of blueberry’s (for flavor) and a banana. I fear I will need the potassium. I will have a zero calorie sports drink after the first 3 miles. Melissa prefers pasta on the night before a big run. She has a 12 miler that I have nicknamed Tour De Kettering. She will be out for about 96 minutes tomorrow and will be carrying 16 ounces of the same zero calorie sports drink. She also has stepped up her running gear with new Saucony shoes and a new top that should help running in the heat.

Will work on an update following the run tomorrow a.m.

4 miles down

July 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment

and 9.1 to go.

I ran the 4 miles I told you all about yesterday. The run wasn’t bad. It had a couple of really long stretches of road in it. 3/4 of a mile or so without a turn. I am used to more turns than that. My pace was slower at 12:30 but I completed the entire run without walking.

I wish I had shuffled the iPod this morning. My regular ending song came on at the regular time: 33:45. My final song is a quick little ditty by Joe Ely that pushes me over the last 1/4 mile. Except this morning at the conclusion of Joe’s live cut of “Me and Billy the Kid” I still had 12 minutes (an entire mile) to go.  A bit deflating.

Wifey just hit the road for a ten miler and she is wearing her new running skirt. It was a birthday gift (at her request).  She should be back in about 80 minutes.  I need a shower, fluids and some first aid!

Glad you asked

July 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Thanks to a comment from DMYii we have a post.

I have been running. Thanks for your inquiry. Tomorrow will complete 3 week of training. So far I have lost an inch or two and 2 pounds. I do love the Chinese buffets at lunch time.

In review, during the week of 7/7 I ran 2 miles on Tue, Thur and Saturday. I dropped 45 seconds off each mile by the end of the first week of running. The week of 7/14 proved a bit more challenging. Tuesday was a 2.5 mile run, Thursday was a 3 mile run and a three miler completed the week on Saturday morning. My pace was a steady 11:46 each run.

This week has been a bit tougher and it ain’t over yet. A three miler started the week on Tuesday, Thursday I opted for the treadmill downtown at the Y before a meeting. That was a bad choice. My feet and mind, sans the iPod, hated the treadmill. After two miles I walked to the steam room. The run was supposed to be a three miler.

Tomorrow is the biggest challenge. A leisurely 4 miler first thing in the morning. I will be hitting the sidewalks and streets for this one and leaving the treadmills for mice and other inside runners. I am extremely nervous about this run. 3.1 has been the longest I have ever run without stopping. My goal is to keep this under 12 minute miles and not to stop running.

My route is here: Kettering 4 miler

Wish me luck! Next week is a 3 mile on Tuesday, 4 mile on Thursday and 5 mile easy run on Saturday. Apparently they are not long runs until they are 6 miles. Those begin on Aug 9 and 16. I am planning to run my “10 miles for the Jeep” on October 11. That is 8 days before the half marathon.

So how about that for an update?
